Along the way\, we’ll share tips for exploring and stewarding the land responsibly. Perfect for first-time visitors\, new volunteers\, or anyone who wants to feel more at home in the coastal canyons. \n\n\n\nThis moderate difficulty hike is approximately 3.5 miles long and has 600 feet of elevation gain\, and includes views of the beautiful rock formations in the Canyon\, the expanse of the South Coast Wilderness\, and Sycamore and Oak groves. \n\n\n\nAge: 12 or older. DESCRIPTION:Join Laguna Canyon Foundation and the Sawdust Festival staff at the Berns Canyon Preserve as we learn about our native ecosystems and how we might explore them through art. This beginner class is perfect for those interested in exploring watercolor landscapes using watercolor-colored pencils. We will learn how to sketch and layer color with pencils\, then activate the pigment with water to create soft\, painterly effects. We’ll cover basic techniques like shading\, blending\, and creating texture\, all while working on a simple\, scenic landscape. No experience is necessary—just bring your curiosity and creativity!    \n\n\n\nThis program is free with a suggested donation to cover the costs of materials and staffing. This donation is optional and is considered “sliding scale.” Please contribute what you can.  \n\n\n\nAge: 16 or older. DESCRIPTION:As the day starts to settle into night at Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park\, bats awaken and stir. Come hear fascinating tales of our flying mammals. We will spend time near the picnic tables hearing stories about our little heroes’ nighttime adventures. We will then take a short walk to see our bats begin their evening of hunting for insects. Be prepared to walk about 1/2 mile.  \n\n\n\nAge: 6 or older. DESCRIPTION:The rocks of Laguna Coast Wilderness Park tell a story dating back millions of years. Join OC Park and LCF volunteers as they take you on a journey through history. You will discover volcanic intrusions\, explore rock formations 40 million years old\, and experience the only naturally occurring lake in Orange County. This program starts at the Nix Nature Center where we will discuss the rock formations of Orange County for about one hour. Then we will head out on trail\, where we will be hiking and exploring about 1 mile up Little Sycamore Trail. For group registrations or questions please email volunteer@lagunacanyon.org \n\n\n\n\n\nParticipants must individually sign a waiver at the beginning of the program. For participants under 18\, a parent or guardian must sign the waiver. \n\n\n\n\n\nTo protect all employees\, volunteers\, and participants\, please do not attend if you are not feeling well\, have symptoms of illness or have been in contact with someone who was ill. \n\n\n\n\n\nIf you register and are no longer able to attend\, please cancel your registration as soon as possible to allow others the chance to register. \n\n\n\n\nContact volunteer@lagunacanyon.org with any questions.  \n\n\n\nWeather\, including high temperatures and wet or muddy trail conditions\, may lead to cancellation of this event.
