DESCRIPTION:Come and learn how to be a scientist by joining OC Parks Naturalists in a BioBlitz! Did you know California is a biodiversity hotspot! Help scientists and OC Parks Staff with documenting the species found in Laguna Coast Wilderness Park. You will learn about California’s unique biodiverse flora and fauna and how to use iNaturalist. Then you will go out and hike on your own while documenting the species you find along the way!  \n\n\n\nDownload the iNaturalist app on your phone and create an account before arriving to the program! You will choose the trail you want to hike\, whether that be easy\, medium\, or hard.  \n\n\n\nAge: 7 or older. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.  \n\n\n\nLocation: James Dilley Preserve\, Laguna Coast Wilderness Park (I-5 or 405 south to 133 south to stoplight at 73 toll road; and make a U-turn\, go 1 block. DESCRIPTION:Do you dig plants? If so\, join Laguna Canyon Foundation for a morning of creating healthier habitats at the 18-acre Berns Canyon Preserve! LCF volunteers and staff will work together on various stewardship activities\, including hand-weeding non-native plants\, hand watering\, seed collection\, and planting. No experience is necessary\, and all are welcome to come learn and tend to these habitats together. All tools are provided for volunteers.  \n\n\n\nAge: 16 or older. DESCRIPTION:Do you want to unplug and relax in nature?  Join Laguna Canyon Foundation Volunteers on a guided walk to experience the outdoors in a new way and allow your natural sense of wonder to take you to a mindful space outside.  \n\n\n\nWe will walk less than 1 mile on relatively flat terrain and take stops along the way to engage in playful activities and mindfulness exercises to deepen our connection with the natural environment and ourselves. Our walk will end with a tea ceremony focused on reciprocity\, a segue from the special\, quiet space we share on our walk\, back to the busy world.  \n\n\n\nDisclaimer: This program involves making and drinking tea made from sustainably sourced native plants. If you have food allergies or sensitivities\, please be sure to notify park staff upon arrival.  \n\n\n\nAge: 10 or older. Esta actividad bilingüe por el sendero Aliso Creek Trail East es de aproximadamente 3 millas y 150 pies de altitud\, y tiene como propósito explorar el entorno natural en inglés y español\, fomentando la conexión\, la curiosidad y el sentido de comunidad. SUMMARY:Advanced Fitness Hike
DESCRIPTION:Please be aware this is an Advanced Fitness Hike and not for beginners; the pace is approximately a 19-minute mile. Join Laguna Canyon Foundation Volunteers to raise your heart rate and your spirits on this very strenuous\, fast paced 8-mile hike over steep and uneven terrain\, including 730 ft. of elevation gain in 0.6 miles on Sheep Run trail. This route starts at Aliso Creek Trail East\, continues up on Sheep Run (formerly known as Mentally Sensitive)\, and down on Meadows Trail. Your hard work will be rewarded with sweeping views of the park!  \n\n\n\nPlease plan to arrive 10 minutes early. This group leaves promptly at 8:00 a.m.  \n\n\n\nAge: 16 or older. Along the way\, we’ll share tips for exploring and stewarding the land responsibly. Perfect for first-time visitors\, new volunteers\, or anyone who wants to feel more at home in the coastal canyons.  \n\n\n\nThis is an easy-paced hike to Barbara’s Lake from the Nix Nature Center\, climbing Edison trail to an overlook of the lake and mountain views (approximately 3 miles\, minimal elevation gain). This trail is a very popular trail for families and hikers that want to visit the only natural lake in Orange County\, Barbara’s Lake.  \n\n\n\nAge: 12 or older. This month’s program will feature a short\, guided meditation and instruction on painting a watercolor landscape. This beginner class is perfect for those interested in exploring watercolor landscapes using watercolor-colored pencils. We will learn how to sketch and layer color with pencils\, then activate the pigment with water to create soft\, painterly effects. We’ll cover basic techniques like shading\, blending\, and creating texture\, all while working on a simple\, scenic landscape. No experience is necessary—just bring your curiosity and creativity!    \n\n\n\nThis program is free with a suggested donation to cover the costs of materials and staffing. Get up close and personal with the trails you use; you’ll see them in a whole new way. No experience necessary. This is FUN hard work. Whatever your skill level is\, there is a job to do: clearing drains to get the water off the trail\, pruning vegetation back to keep users on the trail\, moving dirt to rebuild eroded tread\, and restoring impacted areas are just some of the tasks we will accomplish. We will be using tools such as loppers\, picks\, shovels\, and McLeod’s to improve the user experience\, protect the fragile habitat and increase the sustainability of our trails. Expect to hike up to 4 miles while carrying tools.   \n\n\n\nAge: 16 or older. DESCRIPTION:Join Laguna Canyon Foundation Volunteer naturalists in partnership with OC Parks to enjoy an easy\, 2.5-mile Family Hike over moderate but uneven terrain (45-ft. elevation gain). Starting at the James Dilley Preserve\, we will hike one of the most diverse areas of Laguna Coast Wilderness Park to Barbara’s Lake and back.   \n\n\n\nAge: 6 or older. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.   \n\n\n\nLocation: James Dilley Preserve\, Laguna Coast Wilderness Park (I-5 or 405 south to 133 south to stoplight at 73 toll road; and make a U-turn\, go 1 block. Dilley is on the right.).  \n\n\n\nParking: $3/car at James Dilley Preserve parking lot. Parking is limited\, carpooling is encouraged.  \n\n\n\nDifficulty Rating: 2/5   \n\n\n\nMaterials: Participants must bring plenty of water\, closed-toed shoes\, and sun protection. Along the way\, we’ll share tips for exploring and stewarding the land responsibly. Perfect for first-time visitors\, new volunteers\, or anyone who wants to feel more at home in the coastal canyons.   \n\n\n\nThis hike is approximately 4.2 miles long and has 660 feet of elevation gain\, and includes views of the beautiful rock formations in the Canyon\, the expanse of the South Coast Wilderness\, and surrounding features.   \n\n\n\nAge: 12 or older. DESCRIPTION:Please be aware that this is a Fitness Hike and not for beginners; the pace is approximately a 19-minute mile. Join Laguna Canyon Foundation Volunteers to raise your heart rate and your spirits on this strenuous\, fast-paced\, 8-mile hike over steep and uneven terrain with an 1\,340-ft. elevation gain.  \n\n\n\nPlease plan to arrive 10 minutes early. This group leaves promptly at 8:30 a.m.  \n\n\n\nAge: 16 or older. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.   \n\n\n\nLocation: Canyon View Staging Area\, Aliso & Wood Canyons Wilderness Park. From Pacific Park/Canyon Vistas intersection\, go northwest on Canyon Vistas. We will meet on the paved sidewalk easement leading toward Wood Canyon Trail.  \n\n\n\nParking: Free neighborhood parking. Park legally (note street signs) on or near Canyon Vistas\, preferably between Coastal Oak and Madia (22144 region of Canyon Vistas). SUMMARY:Art in the Canyon – Watercolor Landscapes with the Sawdust
DESCRIPTION:Join Laguna Canyon Foundation and the Sawdust Festival staff at the Berns Canyon Preserve as we learn about our native ecosystems and how we might explore them through art. This month’s program will feature a short\, guided meditation and instruction on painting a watercolor landscape. This beginner class is perfect for those interested in exploring watercolor landscapes using watercolor-colored pencils. We will learn how to sketch and layer color with pencils\, then activate the pigment with water to create soft\, painterly effects. We’ll cover basic techniques like shading\, blending\, and creating texture\, all while working on a simple\, scenic landscape. No experience is necessary—just bring your curiosity and creativity!    \n\n\n\nThis program is free with a suggested donation to cover the costs of materials and staffing. This donation is optional and is considered “sliding scale.” Please contribute what you can.  \n\n\n\nAge: 16 or older.
