About Laguna Canyon Foundation 

Founded in 1990, Laguna Canyon Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and protecting the South Coast Wilderness, a 22,000-acre network of open space surrounding Laguna Beach in Orange County, California which is on traditional landsof the Tongva and Acjachemen peoples.  

We acquire open space to add to the system of protected lands that make up the South Coast Wilderness, offer education programs for school children and the general public, maintain and improve trails, restore habitat and conduct other land management activities throughout the South Coast Wilderness.  

Laguna Canyon Foundation’s Conservation Programs include the Trails Program, the Fuel Modification Program, and the Land Management Program.

Job Description Summary 

 Working closely with the senior leadership team, the Outreach and Development Director manages the marketing and community efforts along with the Volunteer, Education, and Fundraising programs to ensure cohesive and effective strategic planning and implementation while cultivating external partnerships and stakeholder engagement to further build Laguna Canyon Foundation’s mission, projects, and sustainability. 

 Duties and Responsibilities 

 Strategic Communications: 

  • Ensure consistent and equitable employee relations. Cultivate internal talent and assist with succession planning. Nurture and develop cross-pollination among departments to strengthen our story and brand both internally and externally. 
  • Build and track program and project budgets to support the overall organizational budget. 
  • Research, write and manage program-specific grants.  
  • Further develop our inclusion messages and support our commitment to JEDI. 
  • Continue working with local media on regular columns and providing content/photos.  
  • Successfully implement initiatives partnering with outside organizations: Laguna Beach City, LBHS, Fullerton College, and others.
  • With input from all staff, manage website content and social media.  

 Fundraising Management: 

  • Assess and recommend improvements for the CRM system. Implements improvements, staff adoption and enforces user protocols. 
  • Support donor stewardship.  
  • Focus on moving donors through the giving and volunteer pipeline.  
  • Develop and implement the organization’s fundraising strategy and plan.  
  • Manage and plan for grant applications, reports, and execution. 
  • Plan and implement fundraising events. 

Outreach and Education: 

  • Manage the recruitment, training, and support of field educators and all new and existing volunteers. 
  • Schedule and conduct regular Volunteer Orientations and enrichment opportunities. 
  • Develop, schedule, and implement the South Coast Wilderness Education Program field trips and staff as needed. 
  • Develop, schedule, and market volunteer-led events; attend as needed.   
  • Plan for and attend community meetings and events.  
  • Manage volunteer paperwork and database.  

 Qualifications 

  •  Commitment to the vision and mission of Laguna Canyon Foundation. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills to nurture community and staff relationships. 
  • Ability to work effectively both as a productive team member and lead independent initiatives. 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills. 
  • CPR/First Aid certified. 
  • Proven strategic thinking to grow and develop programs independently. 
  • Proven record of successful project implementation with measurable results.  
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications or related field, advanced degree preferred. 
  • Strong background in administration, project management, or related field. 
  • Weekend, evening, and non-traditional hours will be required.
